Nutritional Concepts in Ruminants.
Are lambs the same type of animal as pigs? Of course not, but we often attempt to feed them using similar methods. Lambs are ruminant animals that have the unique ability to digest the fiber fraction found in forage and other feeds. Many people believe that ruminants have 4 separate stomachs. This is partially untrue. Actually, ruminants have 1 stomach with 4 separate compartments (reticulum, rumen, omasum, and abomasum). The rumen is the largest of the 4 and the most important for giving ruminant animals their distinct nutritional characteristic.

Rumen Bugs.
The rumen contains a unique family of microorganisms. We call these the ruminal “bugs”. The ruminal bugs consist primarily of bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Working together, these bugs are responsible for the digestion of feed fiber. In a properly fed ruminant, these bugs flourish and provide an important source of protein to the animal, called microbial protein.

Rumen Bypass Protein.
The ruminant animal depends on two sources of protein for its proper growth and development, 1) microbial protein, and 2) rumen bypass protein. The rumen bypass protein is protein found in the diet that escapes digestion by the ruminal bugs. Bypass proteins provide an important part of the total protein needed by young, rapidly growing lambs.

Animals don’t have a specific “protein” requirement. Instead, they depend on the small components that make up protein, called amino acids. Every protein is a result of several connecting units of these amino acids. In the small intestine protein is broken down into individual amino acids, which are then absorbed into the animal’s body to support growth and development.

For ruminant animals, the exact proportion of required amino acids is currently unknown; therefore, it is important to supply a variety of bypass protein sources to ensure a steady flow of amino acids into the small intestine.

ProLamb was developed to help take the guesswork out of this important nutritional concept. ProLamb contains 5 sources of rumen bypass protein. Together, ProLamb’s rumen bypass protein concentration exceeds 45% of the total protein. Fed at ½ to 1 ounce per day, ProLamb will help young lambs express their fullest genetic potential.

ProLamb is also fortified with other important supplemental nutrients:
